Half the fat, but make sure it’s still got all the quality
So-called ‘50% fats’ are a great option for dairy producers looking to gain the benefits of rumen-protected fats without the cashflow commitment required by 100% fat products. But according to Trident’s Daniel Chilvers, it’s important to pay close attention to the quality of both the fat and its carrier if problems are to be avoided.
“High levels of liquid fat can harm rumen function and cause butterfat percentage to drop, so choose a product based instead on a quality rumen-protected fat,” he explains. “And make sure the carrier has a proven nutritional value, such as palm kernel expeller or sugar beet feed, and FEMAS approved.”
